Featured Poem: Invictus by WE Henley. Written by Emma Walsh, 18th May 2016. red-white.jpg. Our Featured Poem is a little late this week after all the Think Day

William Ernest Henley’s Invictus is a poem that conveys the idea of dealing with struggles head-on. The struggle, in this situation, is a reference to Henley’s bout of tuberculosis of the bone, which led to his leg being amputated. Invictus was the favorite poem of both American Civil Rights firebrand and revered Senator John Lewis, as well as Nelson Mandela, the long-imprisoned and finally triumphant President of South Africa. It seems appropriate on this date to re-read this poem. «Invictus» handler om bestemthet, mot og vilje til å overleve under de hardeste pinsler. Henley var ateist , noe som er representert på flere vis i diktet, som i linjen «I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul», som antyder at han er, om ikke en gud i kraft av seg selv, så i hvert fall en herre av egen skjebne, uten innblanding av en skaper.

Explore the poem. ‘Invictus’ is Latin for ‘unconquerable’. Henley wrote this poem about stoicism, courage and refusing to accept defeat while enduring a severely testing time in hospital. He had contracted tuberculosis of the bone in his youth, and the lower part of one of his legs was amputated in his twenties.
